Mother’s Rooms Rising in Popularity as Employee Benefit

by Healthy Horizons on March 13, 2020

Trying to ace the competition for top talent among working moms? Serena Williams would consider that a stroke of genius!

The tennis champion has joined the movement to help fight workplace bias against mothers. Williams, who shared her own breastfeeding experiences as a new mother, recently became a strategic advisor at The Mom Project, a recruitment platform for mothers looking to re-enter the workforce.

“Returnships” join lactation services and paid leaves in the new wave of employee benefits designed to attract and retain working mothers and parents.

According to the 2019 Employee Benefit Survey by the Society of Human Resource Management, these are the family-related benefits rising in popularity among employers:

● Mother’s rooms (equipped to exceed federal standards): 51% in 2019, up from 35% in 2015

● Paid maternity leave: 34% in 2019, up from 21% in 2015

● Paid paternity leave: 30% in 2019, up from 17% in 2015

● Phased-in work returnships: 12% in 2019, up from 2% in 2015

Despite the growth in workplace lactation spaces, related benefits for lactation counseling and support (13%) and shipment of breast milk while traveling (2%) were not yet as widely offered in 2019. Sounds like there's plenty of room for growth.

We can make a positive difference in the work experience for nursing moms. Let’s talk!
