6 Tips to Get You and Your Baby Ready for Fall

As the days get shorter and the leaves change color, it's time to prepare for the change of seasons. Get your family ready for the cooler weather and flu season with these seasonal health tips and reminders!

  1. Breastfeeding moms give their baby an extra boost of immunity from illnesses because they pass antibodies onto their baby through breastmilk. If a baby has been exposed to germs that the mother has not, mom will give antibodies to the baby once the baby exposes her. Continue to give breastmilk to protect your baby during cold and flu season!
  2. As the weather gets cooler and people spend more time together indoors, it's easier for babies and kids to catch colds and flu. Show your toddler how to wash their hands to promote healthy habits. Use warm water and soap and get in between fingers and under the nails. Sing a short song (15-20 seconds) with your toddler while washing so they learn how long to wash. Encourage the rest of your household to wash their hands often.
  3. If baby does get sick continue to nurse! Make them more comfortable by propping them upright and nurse in a room with a humidifier to combat congestion that may make it difficult for baby to nurse.
  4. Prepare for cold weather! Make sure your baby has a warm jacket, hat, and appropriate clothing for the coming cold weather. As your baby grows into a toddler, you'll want to get sturdy shoes for running outdoors. During the rainy season, those puddles become irresistible! Children love jumping and walking into puddles, so get your little one a set of cute rainboots for the season.
  5. Don't forget to take care of yourself! Expecting and nursing moms need warm clothes for the change of season. Look for options that are functional for nursing. There are lots of great warm weather styles that look great and are easy to nurse in. One example is the Ready Flex Fleece that has side zippers to accommodate a growing belly and lots of convenient pockets. It has a smart nursing function to keep you warm while feeding your baby. 6. Cold weather often means dry skin for both mom and baby. Use a gentle soap for your baby's bath with lukewarm water. Keep the bath short, no more than 10 minutes to prevent baby's skin from drying out. Apply a moisturizer to your baby's skin right after bath, while the skin is still damp.
